Nicknamed the “Gob sweater” after old Navy slang for a sailor, this heavy wool pullover was a standard-issue layer for U.S. Navy crews in World War II. Officially listed as a “jersey” in Naval regulations, it was worn on watch duty and on deck, keeping sailors insulated against biting winds and damp sea air. Its mock turtleneck collar, rib-knit cuffs and waistband, and dense wool construction made it one of the most trusted cold-weather garments at sea.

Part of its enduring appeal is just how easy it is to wear. Designed with a cropped body that sits neatly at the waist, the Gob sweater layers cleanly under outerwear without hanging below jackets or uniforms. It’s a throw-on piece that adds warmth without bulk, making it as versatile today as it was for sailors standing watch on cold decks.

This garment is made to stretch, so consider getting an inch or so smaller than your regular measurements. True WW2 era gob sweaters are slightly itchy, and were made to be layered over long sleeve garments.
